Wava Sue Hurley, 83, of Yantis passed on to eternity at her home on January 4, 2022. She was born the only daughter of Jesse O. and Mildred Sims Douglas on February 6, 1938, at home in southern Hopkins County. She was a lifelong Church of Christ member. Wava graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1956 and went on to attend East Texas State College, graduating with her master’s degree in Home Economics. While there, she enjoyed sorority life and fashion modeling.
After college, Wava devoted 65 years to teaching Home Economics. Ms. Hurley spent many of those teaching years at Alba-Golden and then Rains I.S.D., but also taught in Cooper, Sugarland, and Yantis. She even held the honor of serving as President of the Texas Vocational Home Economics Teachers Association from 1985-1986 and as President of the Texas Beta Nu teacher sorority from 1996-1998.
Wava Sue’s passion for cooking, sewing, and homemaking carried over in her personal life as well where she was well-renowned for her extravagant wedding cakes, birthday cakes, pies, and catering. She was also a master seamstress who kept her granddaughters outfitted in the latest fashions in the rodeo and horseshow circuits. Of all her accomplishments though, her favorite title to carry was “Nanny” to her grandkids. Nanny was known for pancakes, banana pudding, and never missing an extracurricular event.
Wava Sue Hurley is survived by “her Lisa”, only daughter, Lisa Hurley Burchfield and husband Ricky of Yantis; granddaughter Kristin McKinney and husband J.D.of Yantis; granddaughter Starla English and husband Dallas of Comfort, Texas; and great- grandchildren Trentin, Dylan, Dobbs, and Drew. She also considered countless colleagues and former students to be family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
