Funeral services for Verna Barnes, age 83, of Grandview, formerly of Hopkins County, will be held at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, at 11:00 a.m, Monday, July 21, 2008, with Steve Handley and Buddy Fry officiating. Interment will follow at Mahoney Cemetery, with Gene Neal, Mike Phipps, Charles Phipps, Dale Phipps, Larry Pettit and Bobby Barnes serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to service time, Monday, July 21, 2008 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Verna Barnes passed away Thursday evening, July 17, 2008, at Grandview Nursing Home in Grandview. She was born in Arbala, on January 2, 1925, the daughter of O. C. and Dorsey Holbert Neal. She married Isaac Thomas Barnes in Sulphur Springs, on April 24, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1996. Mrs. Barnes was a retired mail clerk with the United States Postal Service. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: two daughters, Doris Jean Ross and husband, Jim, of New Summerfield and Cindy Colquitt and husband, Mike, of Grandview; two sons, Thomas Errol Barnes of Argyle and James Anthony Barnes of Oregon; sister, Irene Daughtry, of Mt. Pleasant; brother, O. C. Neal of Temple; grandchildren, Denise Ross, Joy Jones, Kyle Ross, Marcie Freelen, Mandy Bradshaw, Shannon Clouse, Jennifer Barnes, Nikki Colquitt and Elizabeth Colquitt; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by grandson, James E. Ross, Jr., four brothers and three sisters.
