Funeral services for Thurman Ray Newkirk, Sr. of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2013, with Rev. Kenneth Rhoades and Rev. Bruce Stinson officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Sanford Shell, Mike Clem, Colton Newkirk, Mike Nixon, Darrell Butler, Jesse Butler and Daniel Butler serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 11, 2013 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Thurman Ray Newkirk, Sr. passed away Saturday, February 09, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Hopkins County on June 21, 1932, the son of Leonard Allen Newkirk and Ethel (Johnson) Newkirk. He married Rubie Nell Henderson in Hopkins County on June 4, 1952; she survives. He was a retired road builder with A. K. Gillis, a member of Central Baptist Church and he was a Mason. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Other survivors include: two daughters, RaeNell Newkirk of Denton and Dearease Newkirk of Winnsboro; son, Thurman Ray Newkirk, Jr. and wife, Cindy of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Carolyn Ethridge of Greenville and Pearl Walthal of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Janice Nixon and husband, Michael, Shannon Wright, Cayla Rae Newkirk and Colton Newkirk and great-grandchild, Connor Ray Nixon. He was preceded in death by brother, James Newkirk and two sisters, Alyene Poe and Thelma Richardson.
