Funeral services for Phillip M. "Pete " McDonald, age 82, of Sulphur Springs are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Shane Carrington will officiate. Burial will follow services in the Reilly Springs Cemetery , with Jerry Mack Temples, Jeremy Jones, Chad Jones, Michael Lawrence, Danny Lawrence, Cody Kirby, Mark McClendon and Jay McClendon serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Fisher, G. R. Romans, Huel Hammonds, Don Petty, Malcom King and Bob Parker. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 9, 2008, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Phillip M. "Pete" McDonald passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 7, 2008 at Carriage House Manor Nursing Home. He was born on April 16, 1926, to a pioneer Hopkins County family in the Reilly Springs Community, the son of Dan and Charlotte Jewel "Lottie" Vanderslice McDonald. He was a lifelong resident of Hopkins County , where he was a farmer, cattleman and owned McDonald Grocery and Feed for 42 years. His passions were his dedicated support of his family, his involvement with the local 4-H and FFA youth programs, his ability to cook Hopkins County Stew and gardening. He will always be remembered for the outstanding watermelons that he grew. He married Joyce Marie Crouch, on March 12, 1954, in Palestine , Texas ; she survives. He served in the military in the United States Army and was a member of Southside Church of Christ.
Survivors include: his wife of over 54 years, Joyce McDonald; two sisters, Sybil McClendon of Sulphur Springs and Sarah Boyd and husband, Earnest Mack, of Big Spring; son, Bobby McDonald of Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Judy McDonald Jones and husband, Marlin, of Sulphur Springs and Jan McDonald Lawrence and husband, David, of Muleshoe; six grandchildren, Jeremy Jones and Chad Jones and wife, Laura, of Sulphur Springs, Michael Lawrence and wife, Jandi, of Muleshoe, Danny Lawrence and wife, Shannon, of Houston, Abby Lawrence Kirby and husband, Cody, of Muleshoe and Jacy Lawrence of Muleshoe and three great-granddaughters, Landri Lawrence, Kobi Kirby and Jadi Jones. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Elma Crouch of Sulphur Springs, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends and business associates.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jason Samuel Lawrence, in 1987; five brothers, Neal McDonald, David McDonald, Eugene "June" McDonald, Charles Keith McDonald and an infant; two sisters, Edith McDonald Harris and Arlene McDonald Temples; and his father-in-law, T. E. Crouch.
