Funeral services for Nila Blackmon, age 88, of Dallas, formerly of Sulphur Springs, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother B. J. Teer officiating. Interment will follow in the Providence Cemetery in Franklin County, with Sean Powell, Cory Powell, Johnnie Bynum, Jr., Nicholas Bynum, Wyatt Bynum, Tom Duevel and Bruce Powell serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Nila Blackmon passed away Saturday evening, June 28, 2008, at Senior Care Lake Pointe in Rockwall. She was born in Scroggins, on February 24, 1920, the daughter of William Elijah and Ruth Estelle Newkirk Whittiker. She married Jonas Sikes Blackmon on June 5, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1960. Mrs. Blackmon was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church in Mesquite.
Survivors include: daughter, Virginia Bynum of Dallas; sister, Valta Gay Rushing of Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Joanna Duevel and Johnnie Bynum, Jr. and great-grandchildren, Sean Powell, Corey Powell, Nicholas Bynum and Wyatt Bynum. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
