Nell was born on August 8, in Cooper, TX to Eutah and Mary (Cavanaugh) McGuyer. She married George Payne on May 12, 1951 in Texarkana, Arkansas.

In a community full of amazing women, Nell was a beacon of strength and beauty. She was a central figure at Weaver Baptist Church as she printed the bulletin until her final year.  She also served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Weaver Cemetery for over 25 years.  To her kids and grandkids she was simply known as mama or grams. She was the matriarch of the Payne family and the glue that held everything together.  After losing her husband 30 years ago, she continued to support and guide the family on a daily basis. For 3 decades, she was the epitome of strength to her family and close friends.  She loved with everything she had, and she could also be very stubborn!  With her grandkids she was there for them daily with something to eat or drink when they would come visit her after their chores were complete at the dairy barn. If she had made stew the day before, it was like hitting the lottery. Always there to hang out, talk, and love on all of them.  With her great grandkids, she loved them with just as much fervor as she loved her kids and grandkids.  With age, Nell never lost the spunk that made her so special, and she wasn’t afraid to put you in your place.  Grams was the boss, and everyone knew this. She was truly the strongest, most beautiful woman we have ever met.  Nell is now dancing in heaven with her husband George Weldon (Papa).   And in her own words on what’s one of the first things she wants to do when she gets to Heaven.  “I’m going to roller skate.”

Grams, dance free with Papa, and skate until you can’t stand!

She is survived by her sons, Junior, Ricky, and Scott Payne; grandchildren, Jennifer Evans and Cory Payne, Haylee and Daniel Bercaw, Micah and Krystal Payne, Miles and Richelle Payne; great grandchildren, Aubree Evans, Quinn Payne, Isaiah, Ethan, and Titus Bercaw, Ayden, Avery, and Max Payne; brothers, Jimmy McGuyer and wife, Betty, and Charles McGuyer; sister, Delores Osborn and husband, Gerald.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson-in-law, Clay Evans; brothers, Gary McGuyer and John William McGuyer; father and mother-in-law, Alger and Ola Payne.

Memorial can be made to Weaver Baptist Church at 8749 US-67 Saltillo, TX 75478.
