A military graveside service, under the direction of The Hopkins County Military Coalition, for Luther J. Goggans, age 83, of Dallas, formerly of Hopkins County, will be held at Tira Cemetery, at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Rev. Don Shaw will be officiating. There will be no formal visitation.
Luther J. Goggans passed away Saturday morning, May 10, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Birthright, on July 17, 1924, the son of Luther Benson and Nettie Raul Goggans. He married Norma Patterson in Greenville , on June 16, 1949. Mr. Goggans retired from the United States Air Force, after serving 23 years. He served during World War II, making 18 trips over Japan as a bombardier and tail gunner in B29?s. After World War II, he was a tail gunner in B36?s. After retiring from the Air Force, he moved back to Dallas and went to work for Texas Instruments, retiring after 18 years. He was of the Methodist faith, a Mason and a member of Grand York Rite Bodies of Mississippi Columbus . He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Norma Goggans; daughter, Kyla Sue Goggans Studer both of Dallas; numerous nieces and nephews, with a special closeness to nieces, Dorothy Boger and husband, Fred, of Longview and Missy Baldwin and husband, Scott, of Jefferson. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
