He graduated from Cotton Center high School and soon after married Joyce Marie Brock on November 18, 1956. He also attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Jonny served in the Texas National Guard. Not only was he a private pilot and a boat racer he was an avid outdoorsman. He loved introducing children, especially his kids and grandkids to outdoor sports like hunting and fishing.

Cotton farming, growing grass seed, and even raising catfish were among his many accomplishments. In 1970, he moved to East Texas to raise Charloise cattle. His arrival in Sulphur Springs came in 1976, when he moved his family to the area. He opened a muffler shop, and the first 10 minute oil-change business in Sulphur Springs soon followed. Later, he opened 1-30 RV and eventually added self storage. He was known for telling stories and never met a stranger.
