Ima Baxley

July 17, 1931 — October 3, 2014

Ima Jean Hurley Baxley entered this world to humble origins in Reilly Springs on July 17, 1931. She left from Sulphur Springs to great heavenly riches on October 3, 2014 surrounded by her family.

Ima was born to Josiah Alonso Hurley and Willie Annis Craig. She graduated from Como High School where she enjoyed playing on the ladies basketball team. While stranded on the side of the road with her brother, she met the love of her life, Odell Baxley, when he stopped to help. They married in Sulphur Springs three years later, following his service in World War II, on May 28, 1949. She worked by his side on their Sulphur Springs dairy for over 35 years. Ima enjoyed gardening, crochet and sewing, and cooking. And above all else, she treasured her family. Our fondest memories will be our large Sunday lunches and Christmas days spent together at her house. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church since 1947.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers J.W., James Royal, Billie Joe, Wayne Craig, Marshall Harold, and Tommy Ray Hurley, and by a sister Kathleen Hurley.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her: devoted husband of 65 years; daughters Charlotte Baxter (Kenneth), Sheila Tanton (Arvis), and Lesa Knotts (Larry); grandchildren Kenny Baxter, Joey Baxter, Sharla Tanton Campbell, Shandra Tanton Dunn, Larissa Knotts, Lance Knotts, and Landon Knotts; and six great-grandchildren, all of Sulphur Springs; sisters Luvena Owens of Sulphur Springs and Zelma Gaisbauer of Dallas.

Funeral services will be held on Monday morning, October 6, at 11 AM at Union Baptist Church, 609 County Road 1444, Sulphur Springs, TX. Rev. George McCain and Rev. L.D. Baxley will be officiating. Burial will follow at Reilly Springs Cemetary. Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at Murray-Orwosky Funeral home Sunday evening, 6-8 PM. Pallbearers will be: Kenny Baxter, Joey Baxter, John Campbell, David Dunn, Mike Gaisbauer, Monte Hurley, and Landon Knotts.

We once were your angels, and now you're ours.
