Funeral services for Ike Balkcom, III, age 80, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at First Baptist Church, at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008, with Rev. Fred Lewis and Rev. Ken Rhoades officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Balkcom, I. L. Balkcom, V, Tom Abarr, Geoffrey Abarr, Norman Childers and Kevin Dixon. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ike Balkcom Sunday School Class. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Ike Balkcom, III, passed away at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital, Monday morning, November 17, 2008. He was born in Miami, Florida, on September 3, 1928, the son of Ichabod Lafayette Balkcom, Jr. and Thelma Wilson Balkcom. He married Shirley Mae Darr at Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming on June 30, 1950; she survives. Mr. Balkcom was a retired sheriff for Quitman County, Georgia. He was a member of First Baptist Church and he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Other survivors include: Dr. Ichabod Lafayette Balkcom, IV, and his wife, Deborah, of Sulphur Springs; daughter, Carol Susan Abarr and her husband, Thomas of Hampton, Georgia; sister, Kathleen Susie Childers and her husband, Norman, of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren: Daniel and Julie Balkcom, Ichabod Lafayette Balkcom,V, and his wife, Jamie, Geoffrey Abarr, Ann and Dan Almasay, Ellen Abarr and Katie Abarr and great-grandchildren, Reese Balkcom, Blake Balkcom and Ryan Balkcom, Talon Balkcom, Corbin Abarr, Micah Abarr and Jagger Williams.
