A funeral service for Hershel Harris, Jr., age 82, of Yantis, will be conducted at First Baptist Church in Yantis, at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013, with Rev. David Bagwell and Rev. David Allen officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, and a Masonic graveside service will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Jared Crain, David Alcorn, Jeremy Harris, Jody Harris, Roger Honea, Jr., Tim Harris, Shane Hagen Chris Wagnon, Jerrod Starkey and Ronnie Lee Garvin, Jr. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 1, 2013 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Hershel Harris, Jr. passed away at his residence Wednesday morning, January 30, 2013. He was born in Hominy, Oklahoma on March 19, 1930, the son of Hershel Harris, Sr. and Jewell (Carr) Harris. He married Maggie Elvira Sansing in Hugo, Oklahoma on August 21, 1979; she survives. He was a retired mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and he was retired from Wood County Precinct 1. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Yantis, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club in Yantis, Boy Scouts for Wood County and he was a Shriner. He was also the former mayor and fire chief of Yantis, a member of Yantis school board and a little league coach. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Vivian McCatty and husband, David, of Rockwall and Pam Gooch and husband, Tommy, of Kilgore; two sons, Bobby Harris of Yantis and Brian Harris and wife, Patricia, of Clovis, New Mexico; daughter-in-law, Nancy Starkey of Kilgore; grandchildren, Jared Crain, Daysha Crain-Alcorn, Jeremy Harris, Jody Harris, Jennifer Honea, Rachael McCatty , Tim Harris, Trina Hagen, Alisha Wagnon, Misty Garvin and Jerrod Starkey and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Mike Starkey; grandson, Damon Crain; two brothers, Jack Harris and Bill Harris and two sisters, Ruth Lanier and Mary Jane Gregory. Memorials may be made to Heritage Hospice.
