A memorial service for Harvey Mathes, age 88, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at Spence Chapel, First Baptist Church, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 28, 2009, with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inturment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Mathes' grandchildren, 0. R. Pettit, Brody Koon, Wayne Galyean, Roy Smith, Ernest Teague, and Delmar Richter.
There will be no formal visitation.
Harvey Mathes passed away Sunday evening, January 25, 2009, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born in Sherwood, Wisconsin, on August 22, 1920, the son of Arthur and Hannah Fierke Mathes. He married Jamhilda Koehler at St. John, Wisconsin, on February 16,1954. She preceded him in death in 1981.
Mr. Mathes was a retired minister and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include: three daughters, Ellen Cox of Pickton, Mary Gilbertson, of Sulphur Springs, Lynn Jarvis, of Como; four sons, Bryan Mathes, Neil Mathes, Phillip Mathes, all of Sulphur Springs and Mark Mathes, of Pottsboro; 17 grandchildren, Clint Springfield, Robert Springfield, Sheila Springfield, Seanda Westbrook, Kimberly Mathes, Kacie Mathes, Kyle Mathes, Christopher McDonald, Amanda McDonald, Melissa Mathes; Sean Mathes, Ashlin Mathes, Brooklyn Mathes, Dawson Mathes, Levi Jarviz, Zechariah Jarvis and Hannah Jarvis and two great-grandchildren, Alexandra Springfield and Jackson Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Viola Miller Mathes, sister, Ruby Richter and two grandchildren, Clint and Shane Springfield.
