Harriet Elizabeth Carlton Casey, age 88, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Hopkins House in Sulphur Springs. Services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church of Sulphur Springs, on Tuesday, June17, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. with former pastor Ben Read officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Cemetery with her nephews serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held Monday, June 16, 2008 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Harriet was born on September 11, 1919 in Plainville, KS to Rev. A.L. and Laura Carlton. She graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in religious education and worked many years as a deaconess and teacher for the Methodist Church. While teaching in Albuquerque, NM during WWII, she met Ralph Casey, who was stationed there. They were married on August 1, 1952 in Honey Grove, TX. They had two daughters, Debra, born in 1954 and Rebecca, born in 1956. Later, Harriet and Bonnie Huffstetler co-owned Jack and Jill Play School and Kindergarten from 1962 - 1972. After the death of her beloved husband, Ralph, on December 18, 1972, Harriet returned to college and received her Masater's Degree in Early Childhood from East Texas State University in Commerce. She then taught for a year at Sulphur Bluff and many years at North Hopkins until her retirement in 1986. She also served as a substitute teacherfor Sulphur Springs Independent School Disrict and North Hopkins for many years after her retirement. She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and UMW from 1961 until the time of her death.
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Arlyn, Lawrence, Glen, and James Carlton, and two sisters, Zelfa Neill and Naomi Carter. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Rick Jackson, of Forney, daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Jerry Hathcoat, of Brashear, grandchildren, Janette and Ryan Magan, of Longview, Daniel Hathcoat, of Bryan, Julie Jackson, of Forney, and Anna and David Calavan, of Park Ridge, IL, sisters, Rachel Carter, of Jennings, KS, and Mary Smith, of Sharon Springs, KS, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and former students.
Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs or the Alzheimer's Association of America.
