A graveside memorial service for Glen Dale Hammons, age 82, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park, at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 2009, with Brother Larry Rosamond officiating. A visitation will be held at the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home, Thursday, March 26, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Glen Dale Hammons passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 18, 1926, in Antlers, Oklahoma, the son of Lonnie Washington Hammons and Dorothy Valerie (Houck) Hammons.
He entered into the Navy in 1944 at the age of 18. He was stationed in San Diego, California. He was a seasoned, self-taught musician. He played the banjo, guitar and piano. He worked in the oil fields of Odessa, as a rough neck. He worked in DeQueen, Arkansas as a radio manager and moved on to Nashville, Arkansas as a radio manager. He and his brother, Jerry Hammons, played music professionally for a season. They played in night clubs in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. He became the assistant manager of KPLT in Paris, Texas. He owned and operated the Red River Jamboree. Then he moved to Sulphur Springs. He was the founder and owner of Globe Termite and Fence Company. He and his family ran the Flame restaurant in Sulphur Springs while building up the termite and fence business. He was an awesome entrepreneur!
Survivors include: Sons, Lonnie E. Hammons, Alan Hammons, Danny Hammons and Mike Dennis, all of Sulphur Springs; daughters, Betty Horn of Dike, Glenda Collins of Phoenix, Arizona and Donna Clemmons of Brashear, 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; brothers, Jack Hammons of Phoenix, Arizona, Jerry Hammons of Shreveport, Louisiana, Bennie Rodney and Lonnie Hammons; sisters, Linda Wallace, Johney Rosson and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, all of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Junior Hammons and son, Jim Dennis and grandson, Jared Hammons.
