G. C. Ward passed away on March 7, 2010. He was born on September 30, 1931, in Seminole, Oklahoma to Tom and Willie (Terrell) Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Christopher Walden and brother, W. T. Ward. He is survived by his wife, Della; daughter, Sharon Helm and her husband Charles; daughter, Cheree Ross and her husband, Gary; granddaughter, Monica Glenn and her husband Zachary; grandson, Chase Helm; grandson, Michael Ross, grandson, Ronnie Ross and his wife, Misty and two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Gabrielle.
He moved from Oklahoma to Rylie with his five borthers and sisters after his father passed away in a car accident. While there, he was a member of the Rylie Baptist Church and where he eventually met his wife, Della. He married her on March 11, 1951 and they would have been married 59 years this year.
He worked for Sears for many years and eventually retired in 1985. After retiring, he moved to Weaver where his oldest daughter lived and began helping out with the many hotels the family owned. He never really retired and gave life 110 percent up until the end. He never missed any softball game with his two daughters or a baseball game and softball game with his grandkids. G. C. never met a stranger. He was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back even if was his only one. He loved people and loved kids and would do anything for any person he met. Every year, he and his wife would buy gifts for every child in the church during Christmastime. He was "Papa G" to everyone he met and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
He was a member of the Weaver Baptist Church, where he devoted countless hours to building up the church infrastructure and membership. His vision and leadership has led the church to build a new basketball court, put in a new AC unit and become a wonderful and loving church. His memory is etched into the walls of that church and his legacy will continue to live on many years after his death. He was also a Mason.
Memorials may be made to the Weaver Baptist Church Building Fund, 8749 U.S. Hwy. 67, Saltillo, Texas 75478, (906) 648-2377.
