The true meaning of Heaven became closer to reality when God called our loved one home on February 10, 2012. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at Carriage House Manor.
She was born November 24, 1914, the daughter of James Herbert Hood and Maude (Nordin) Hood, in the Dike Community near Sulphur Springs. Her father served in the Army during World War I, where he gave the ultimate sacrifice in 1917. After his death, she and her mother moved with her grandparents to Sulphur Springs where they continued to live until she left for college in 1933.
At age nine she accepted Christ while attending a revival of the First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs. The revival was held in the old cotton compress warehouse.
She graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1933 and was privileged to graduate from North Texas State University in Denton in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and later acquired her Master's Degree in Education from the University of Houston.
She and her husband, Frank Owen Cain, were married in her Sulphur Springs home on November 24, 1937. He preceded her in death in 2004. Due to varied teacher assignments, they moved to several locations and settled in Lake Jackson for 54 years. Due to declining health, they returned to Sulphur Springs in 2002 to spend their retirement years.
During their marriage of 67 years, the couple was blessed with four wonderful children. During her lifetime, she not only shared with their children in their activities, she was involved in community and church activities including teaching various age groups in Sunday School, a library aide and nursery worker. She was an avid sport fan and boosted her children and those in school where she worked.
The family spent vacation time at the beach or touring various parts of the United States. After the children left the home front, the couple joined the Brazosport Good Sam Recreational Club and shared fellowship with them for 20 years.
Not only was she a sportsman, but she enjoyed crafts of all types. She was one who enjoyed trying to make others happy and her handwork proved it. She made plaques to give to the deserving people for various deeds. In case of something special, she would use the telephone but she preferred personal visits or lengthy newsy letters. All students were recognized at Christmastime with handmade Christmas cards with personal notes included. After her retirement in 1964 she assumed the joyful task of making original cards and personal letters to friends and family members. She always had a heart full of love for the underprivileged and strived to help them to be proud of their accomplishments, no matter the degree. She felt half of her salary was obtained from seeing the smile of accomplishment of a slow student.
Her handcraft desire caused her to love quilt making and she lovingly made graduation quilts for all 16 grandchildren and later joined the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild in Sulphur Springs of which she was a lifetime member. She was a member of the Keenagers Group of senior members in Lake Jackson and a member of the Retired Teachers' Association in Brazosport. She was also a member of the senior group and widows' group at Central Baptist Church where she also enjoyed letter writing to the church missionaries.
Survivors include: two sons, James Alvin Cain and wife, Sandy, of Granite Shoals, Howard Frank Cain and wife, Peggy, of Clute; daughter, Sandra Beth Turner, and husband, Gary, of Sulphur Springs; sister-in-law, Mary Maw of Gilmer; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; numerous neighbors, friends and caretakers .
