Funeral service for De Hungerford, age 97, of Sulphur Springs, will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2020 at First United Methodist Church of Sulphur Springs with Rev. Paul Bailey and Rev. Boyd Sawyer officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park with Ichabod “Quint” Balkcom V, Daniel Balkcom, Scott Barnett, Tee Green, Dr. Chris Burling, and Kevin Dixon serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2020 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mr. Hungerford passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Hopkins Place.
De Hungerford was born August 28, 1922 in Athens, GA to Deforest Hungerford, Sr. and Ruth (Bennett) Hungerford. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Hungerford retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Birthright United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Seniors Club of Sulphur Springs, and a reservist for the Florida Game and Fish Department.
Mr. Hungerford is survived by his daughter, Deborah Balkcom and husband, Dr. I.L. Balkcom IV; adopted sons, Glenn and Scott Barnett; adopted daughter, Kelly Glassburn and husband, Patrick; grandchildren, Ichabod “Quint” Balkcom and Daniel Balkcom; great-grandchildren, Talon, Ryan, Blake, and Reese Balkcom; sister, Dorothy Willis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Bennett Hungerford; sister, Ruth Varner.
