A funeral service for Steve Penland, age 80, of Dike, will be conducted at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2013, with Shane Carrington and Malcom King officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow at Conner Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Keen, Ken Penland, Dan Penland, Randy Newman, Kenny Penland and Michael Hale. His brothers-in-law will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Steve Penland passed away at his residence, Monday evening, November 4, 2013. He was born in Altus, Oklahoma January 18, 1933, the son of Ira Leslie Penland and Mary Clayborn (Truett) Penland. He married Betty Jo Norman March 1, 1976 in Dallas; she survives. He was a metal plater and plant manager of Dallas Plating Company for many years before opening Flora Plating Company which he owned and operated for 13 years. He retired in 1994 due to health issues. He was also a cattleman. As a little boy, he dreamed of owning his own farm. Then in 1979 he and Betty bought their place in Flora, TX where he ran cattle off and on until 2012. He loved "tinkering" with lawn mowers and four wheelers. He was of the Church of Christ faith and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 8560. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Other survivors include: three sons, Kenneth David Penland of Omaha, Nebraska, Daniel Steve Penland and wife Christina of Little Elm and Kevin Ray Keen and wife April of Dike; daughter, Mary Dale Newman and husband Ed of La Vista, Nebraska, two sisters, Elsie Cross and husband Richard of Garland and Irene Dykema and husband John of Belton; nine grandchildren, Randy Newman, Jimmy Newman, David Newman, Terry Wiebers, Kenny Penland, Andrew Penland, Michael Hale, Ashley Keen and Justin Keen and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Buck Penland and Boyd Penland and sister, Dorothy Bybee.
