Carroll "C.W." Bradford died on the morning of Sunday, September 13, 2009 following a brief battle with cancer. Under the arrangement of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home of Sulphur Springs, Texas, the service will be held at 1:00 Wednesday, September 16 at the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs, officiated by Tommy Johnston. The family will receive visitors at Murray-Orwosky on Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Military graveside services, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park.
C.W. was born on December 21, 1929 to Andrew Carroll and Golden Tice Bradford. He graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1947 and received his BBA from East Texas State College, now Texas A&M Commerce, in 1950.
C.W. served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he received his Masters of Education from East Texas. He taught school for 15 years in Lockney, Midland, and Dallas; he then served another 16 years as a principal in the Dallas Independent School District at Stephen F. Austin, Urban Park, Leslie Stemmons, and George Peabody elementary schools. After his retirement in 1984, C.W. worked for Equifax for 10 years.
C.W. married Ann Clarkson on February 4, 1954 in Greenville, Texas. She preceded him in death on September 20, 1973. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Rachel Ann Carpenter.
On February 14, 1975 C.W. married Sue Martin Newsom in Dallas. C.W. and Sue moved back to Sulphur Springs in November of 1993, and then moved to San Angelo in October of 2007.
C.W. is survived by his wife Sue; son John and his wife Betty of Arlington, Texas; daughter Julia Harper of Portland, Oregon; daughter Jill Rotunno and her husband Thomas of Lovington, New Mexico; stepdaughter Karen Clark and her husband Mark of San Angelo; and stepson Jim Newsom of Three Rivers, Michigan. Five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and many dear friends also survive him.
C.W. was a life member of State and National Parent and Teacher Associations and the Texas State Teachers' Association. He was a member and former president of the Sulphur Springs Retired Teachers' Association and was a member of the San Angelo Retired Teachers' Association. C.W. was a member of Southland Baptist Church of San Angelo.
Pallbearers will be Taft Sickles, Don Deaton, Mack White, Ken Thomas, Jack Dyer, James Cross, Grady Chapman, and Bob Phelps. Honorary pallbearers are Neil Henderson and members of the Friday Morning Coffee and Prayer Club and Tom Glidewell's Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, C.W. requested donations be made to the Vacation Bible School program of the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs, 116 Oak Avenue, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482.
