Chester Raleigh

Chester Walter Raleigh passed away on July 20, 2013. He was born on June 27, 1922 in McAlester, OK to Harry and Amy Freeman Raleigh. Chester grew up in the McAlester and Savannah areas and graduated from Savannah High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served as an electrician/carpenter aboard a submarine. He spent time in both Pearl Harbor and Midway during WWII. Chester married Evelyn Coker of Savannah on December 22, 1946. They moved to El Paso, TX where he worked at the Standard Oil Refinery for 35 years and lived for the past 66 years.
Chester loved his family, fishing, and camping. He helped neighborhood children with many 4-H activities. He and Evelyn were members of the High-Flying Sams and lifetime members of the Good Sam organization. He attended Scottsdale Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife, Evelyn, a son Harry Walter Raleigh, and 3 brothers - Lester Raleigh, P.V. Raleigh, and Gene Raleigh, and 3 sisters - Hester Raleigh-Sparks, Murlene Raleigh-Kimball, and Carrie Raleigh-Adams. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Gaylon O'Dell of Yantis, TX; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Linda Raleigh of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren Brenna and Jeff Patton of Euless, TX, Cara O'Dell of Euless, TX, Kyle Raleigh of Tulsa, OK, and Jenny and Taylor Royal of El Paso, great-grandchildren Hannah Patton, Gracyn Raleigh, Creed and Eastan Royal, and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Scotsdale Baptist Church in El Paso on Aug. 3 at 1:00 and at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs on August 17 at 1:00.
